queen bee, forever and always.
sometimes, you watch the world go by, taking part in the things you care about and you think you can benefit from. you're friends with those you like and those you care about and you're not friends with those you don't like, those you don't really care about. sometimes, you say stuff you don't mean, you mean stuff you don't say. sometimes, you make a big deal out of nothing, and sometimes, you make nothing out of a big deal. the sun rises and the sun sets, every day is brand new, but the only way you can make it special is to do something new, something exciting, something that satisfies, pleases and even surprises you. don't let a crush linger, don't have a frienemy, speak the truth but be kind at the same time. and for the people that don't like you, remember: mind over matter. you don't mind, they don't matter. it seems ironic, overused, overrated, even stupid. but yolo.
i clicked midnight into a faster canter, steady to his smooth stride. he had a beautiful canter, so swift and so fast that it was like a black and blond flash as we passed. my soft hair flew behind me, the wind sending it this way and that. i knew i shouldn't be riding without a helmet, and i could get into some serious trouble for it, but what the heck? nobody was up this early anyway, and i would be careful. i trusted midnight with my life, and i knew no matter what happened he'd always save me. grinning, i squeezed his sides again, pushing him into a speedy gallop, his stride not faltering and not even a speck of sweat forming on his pitch black coat. i leaned forward into two point, mimicking the jockey who used to ride him. i loved this feeling- complete adrenaline, a total rush, maximum speed. i knew midnight could go a heck of a lot faster than this, being an ex-racehorse, so i squeezed him again and a brand new burst of energy was brought on. the grass and trees that i passed were a complete blur, and i didn't see anything except for straight ahead. it was like a dream, almost. noticing midnight slowing a little, i sat to his smooth gallop, followed by a steady canter. i leaned forward, hugging his neck and bouncing a little, before finding his stride again.
just then, midnight skidded to a stop, whinnying loudly, taking a few steps back, shaking under me. while trying to calm him, i scanned the horizon, trying to figure out what had spooked him. i gasped when a tall, grey horse approached us, and then took a step back, galloping to the side and rearing. i stiffened, but then remembered what i had to do. i swung my legs over midnight and hopped off as quick as i could, glad that i had been riding bareback. midnight's eyes were huge, the whites showing more than half of them. he reared up and i screamed, the reins slipping out of my hands. he galloped towards the horse, colliding with the frightened grey, and they both reared up. i was still with fear, unknowing of what to do. if i went between them, i'd get hurt. if i didn't, one of the horses would get hurt, or i'd lose midnight if he ran off. finding my breath and knowledge of horses, i looked back at them. i couldn't believe it. they were touching noses. midnight turned, running in the opposite direction with the grey at his haunches, and they circled me happily. i couldn't help but smile, and watch them go. horses were just... so beautiful. beyond belief. their movements were fluent and graceful, and as i watched their muscley legs move, so powerful and quick, i almost cried. almost as suddenly as they had started, they slowed and midnight loped over to me, bumping me with his nose. i hugged his neck and then looked over at the grey. she stood, and it looked as if she was trying to decide weather to come over to me or not. i let go of midnight, knowing he'd stand, and walked over to the grey. i swung a lead rope over her neck, tied it in a way i'd learned at four-h, and led her over. i hopped onto midnight's back and clicked him into a canter, still holding the lead rope and his reins.
the grey cantered easily next to us, she had a gorgeous stride and could keep up easily. i knew she probably belonged to someone else, but now i noticed how skinny she was and immediately felt a pain in my heart.
we arrived back at canterwood when it wasn't even close to six am, and i shivered a little from the chilly winter breeze. the campus was deserted, as was the stable. there were two empty stalls, one next to midnight and one on the other side of the barn. vi wouldn't mind if i put the grey in harley's stall for now, so i led midnight into his before leading the grey into harley's. i untacked and groomed midnight, before making my way into the grey's stall.
looking into her dark eyes, i somehow knew i wouldn't be letting her go anytime soon.
