"Easy, girl" I said, patting Cali, my seven year old Thoroughbred. She had always been high-strung and sensitive, despite the fact we'd been together for 2 years. Cali seemed to understand, and stopped pawing the ground. I grabbed my new saddle out of my tack trunk and set it gently on her back, not wanting to make her even more nervous. I tightened the girth, put on my helmet and bridled Cali. We were so ready to ride. Not. I led her to the arena, somewhat larger than the one at home. There were huge glass windows everywhere. Another girl was already in the arena. I wanted to turn around, untack Cali and put her back in her stall. But, it was too late. I was already here. "Just try to make friends" I grumbled to myself, holding the reins and hoisting myself into the saddle. I clicked to Cali, letting her walk at a brisk pace around the arena, just ahead of the other girl's horse. The girl let her horse trot, and Cali tried to break into a trot, but I held her back, forcing her to walk. This was our first ride here, and it needed to be good. I finally let Cali trot, and she exploded into a fast canter. "Cali!" I cried, "Easy!" But, she ignored me and yanked the reins out of my hands. She bucked and I flew off, hitting the floor of the arena. Cali, all freaked out and scared, was still cantering around the arena like she'd never lost me. "California!" I yelled, walking to the center of the arena and saying "Stop." She came to a dead halt, her nostrils flaring and sweat pouring off of her. The other girl and her horse stood in the corner, trying to stay away from Cali and I. "I am so sorry" I said, holding Cali's reins tightly and walking up to the girl.

I had gotten to the stables about an hour ago. I wanted to work with Memory for a few hours before dinner. However I had took about forty-five minutes just to brush and tack her. I was lost in different day dreams and my jumbled thoughts. When I finally got to the arena, I was glad that it was empty.
I had just finished warm up when another girl and her horse came into the arena. She came in almost hesitantly, as though she was debating whenever or not to come in. She did though and we both started riding. I led Memory into a trot and that's when the problem started. The girl was behind but as far as I could tell, her horse wasn't behaving. I twisted around in the saddle just as her horse yanked the reins out of the girl's hand. I led Memory to the corner the arena, as I wasn't sure what was going to happen.
Memory crabbed stepped and threw her head up. Easy there girl. I whispered to her, trying to calm her down. I looked up to see what was going on with the girl when the horse bunked and the poor girl went flying. I winced when she hit the floor. I was about to dismount to run and check on her when she got up and led her horse over to Memory and I.
"I am so sorry" She said to me. I brushed hair out of my face and pushed up my helmet. Don't worry about it. How are you though? That was a serious fall. I peered at the girl and her horse. Her horse looked fine though his head was down, most likely because he had felt bad about what he had done. The girl looked okay, I mean she didn't act like she was in pain. As far as I could tell, the only thing wrong was that she had some arena dirt all over her face and clothes.

"I'm okay" I said, brushing the arena dirt/sand off my clothes. Cali seemed apologetic. It wasn't her fault, I should have known that she would act up. "I'm Samantha" I said, smiling at the girl, "And this is Cali"I said, patting her soft neck. She nickered at the other girl's horse.

I nodded when she said she was fine. I smiled at her as she introduced herself. I'm Carmela but you can call me Carmel. I reached down and gave Memory a pat on her glossy neck. This is Drifting Memory but everyone just calls her Memory. I let out a little chuckle. I have a lot of nicknames, as you can see. I grinned, flashing dimples.

MAKE A WISH, TAKE A CHANCE,
AND BREAK AWAY! I ran into the arena after i saw what had happened. "Are you guys ok?" I asked, but paused and petted the skittish mare named Cali. "She's an angle, like she never acted up at all!" I exclaimed, and turned to Carmel. "You OK?"

"Yeah, I'm okay" I said. Another girl had entered the arena. "Cali is really spooky" I said, "But when everything calms down, she's good." I smiled, not wanting her to think my horse was crazy. "I'm Samantha" I said, then to explain the disaster, "This is my second day at Canterwood."

MAKE A WISH, TAKE A CHANCE,
AND BREAK AWAY! I laughed. "Didn't waste no time did you? But it is better to have stuff like this happen before you get the 'image' you need to protect... Unless you've already got the 'image'?" I laughed. "Just kidding, I'm Kayla Storm."
