I really want to compete in shows, but the horse I use (and love to death), Spirit is really hard to get to canter. In fact, the only reason she's ever cantered is when my mom was riding her on a trail. She's a little barn sour, so that's the only reason.
So, I was riding her on Thursday and she seemed kind of upset and irritated. She wasn't acting up though, so I didn't think about it. About 15 minutes later, she was in the middle of the arena at a walk and took off at a canter.
I have to admit, I didn't do anything but sit there and cling to the pommel. I would've, but it was just so sudden to me. She ran all the way to the gate in less then three seconds.
Turns out she is deathly afraid of deer.

I have a horse named Charm. (just like Sasha!) we compete in about ten national shows per year....
