[/b] I muttered to myself as I grabbed my keys and my helmet before heading out the door.
My morning alarm went off. Fumbling around in the darkness, my hand lazily reached out and slammed down on the off button, nearly knocking it off in the process. My mind was telling me to not bother getting up, that it was far too early to function in the morning and that there was nothing better than sleep. But that faint little promise was ringing out in the back of my mind, louder than any alarm clock could ever be. Sighing, I rolled out of my bed and hit the floor silently, trying hard to not wake up my roommate entirely as I started shuffling around, grabbing some chaps and a t-shirt to pull over my head. Glancing at my alarm clock now, it's bold neon numbers only read out 5:30, “Still have time,”
The school grounds almost looking haunting with the fog looming around the buildings and in the distance. Canterwood looked dead and unrecognizable in the early morning. The sun had yet to even rise yet, but that was the point. What I was doing this morning would probably be frowned upon by anybody who found out, but I didn't care. A morning ride was a morning ride, and something was telling me that it was fun to watch the sun rise around here in New England. Walking briskly through the campus now, the faint chirping of birds could be heard as they awoke from their slumber. A faint smile rested on my lips, it reminded me of back home, down in the south and endless country. Funny how some things could still be the same even though I was in a totally different place.
Entering the barn, I flipped the lights and headed into the tack room. Going to my locker, I grabbed all my necessities that I would be needing before heading to Fox's stall, “Morning Sunshine,”[/b] I said jokingly, allowing my southern drawl to come out around my horse. It took a moment of drosey recognition, but Fox soon came over to greet me. Leaning over the door and nuzzling the top of my head, “That's what I thought,”[/b] I murmured, giving him a quick snack before I entered into his stall to tack up. When I was done, I lead him outside into the misty morning and mounted up. A snort escaped Fox, and I could see his hot breath swirl out in the cool morning air, as if he were raising spirits from the dead.
Nudging him in the side, Fox started at a leisurely walk, heading out towards the trail and our destination. After a good five minutes and once we hit the woods, I figured that had been enough time of warm up, “Alright boy, let's go,”[/b] and with that, asked him to pick up pace a little. Fox moved smoothly right into his trot before collecting up a canter and we went through the trail now until a certain point and broke off it. Dropping back down to a walk and a trot at certain points, we ventured forward until we hit a clearing upon the hill and I brought him up to a halt, hitting it perfectly as the sun began to rise and break cover.
