Mary Sues.

So, I've been noticing over the past few weeks, there have a been alot of Mary-sues/mary sue posts. What are Mary Sues?


A female character who is so perfect that she is annoying. The name originated in a very short Star Trek story that mocked the sort of female characters who showed up in fanfiction. It usually refers to original female characters put into fanfiction, but can refer to any character.

Mary-Sues are characters who are usually extraordinarily gorgeous, amazingly talented, unusually powerful, and exceedingly attractive to whoever the author has a crush on.

Mary-Sue is often abbreviated to 'Sue.' The male equivelant is either Marty-Stu or Gary-Stu.

There have been alot of these, and it's not just one of you. Here are some examples:

1. Starla walked into the library, tossing her utterly flawless black hair. Boys whistled, girls rolled their eyes in envy. "Starla! Starla!" People from all around called her name. The gorgeous girl politely declined all of them, and sat in the center table, drinking in the endless attention.

2. Georgia couldn't wait to try out for the school play. Walking on stage, she tossed her perfect red hair over her shoulder, showing off her enviable body. Getting to the microphone, she began to sing. Her beautiful, melodic voice filled the stage, her notes soft but perfect. At the end, all the judges gave her a standing ovation.

So, Yeah. It's justt annoying, and difficult to RP with. And it seems like more and more people are doing it. Also, alot of RP sites ban Mary Sues, so you can be banned for it. Having a Mary Sue is just no fun. I will say this right now- I will not RP with any Mary Sues, respond to any Mary Sue topics. I won't, so don't bother PMing me too, like many of you have been doing. It's not worth my time, frankly.

I'm not asking you to be all crazy and be like "Oh, if you don't like it here, just leave." No, I like it here. I just want to make the site a better place.

Welcome (:. And thanks for the site! Looking deeper on it, I found another defintion that would help:

A Mary Sue is generally a character who is created to be admired, envied, or even pitied rather than empathized with. This type of character is nothing new - Puritan literature frequently featured too-good-for-this-sinful-Earth heroines who were created as role models to Puritan children. You've probably heard the expression "Little Goody Two-Shoes," which is frequently used to refer to someone who acts in a sanctimonious manner - this was originally the name of one of these heroines.

Mary Sues aren't just characters you don't like, nor are they simply love interests thrown in out of left field. With a genuine Mary Sue, you'll feel like the writer is constantly trying to rub your nose in how awesome, special, or virtuous the character is. Genuine Mary Sues also tend to bend the very fabric of the universe in their direction - other characters will be inordinately interested in, or even obsessed with the Mary Sue, whether they want to befriend, shag, or destroy xir. And finally, genuine Mary Sues are the spoiled pets of the author: whatever the character wants or needs - be it power, wealth, prestige, or a lover - it comes to the character with ridiculous ease, even to the point of blatantly contradicting previously-established rules.

Mary Sues don't just happen in fanfiction. Original authors have created characters who are just as bad as those created by fanfiction authors.

Mary Sues aren't just female. The name comes from the main character in A Trekkie's Tale, a story parodizing bad Star Trek fanfiction. Because most fanfiction writers are female, most Mary Sues tend to be female - and therefore so was the parody character. The character would have been just as annoying if she'd been male - a fact demonstrated by fans' reaction to Gene Roddenberry's author-avatar Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Mary Sues aren't just strong female characters. If a female character annoys you, ask yourself a simple question: would I find the character equally annoying if she were male? If the answer is no, then the character probably isn't a Mary Sue.

I am just going to put this in this thread.
So, recently, ive noticed alot of ooc comments by particular people in threads. I am just putting this out there-
Unless you are the moderator, or the admin, there is no reason to be posting comments in peoples threads telling them what they are doing wrong/ what they should be doing. Honestly, it really ticks me off. You have no right to go around telling people that they are bad mouthing another charrie, or they something you don't like. This is not your own little universe, and for those of you who think you can control what people do in other threads, your wrong. I mean, really? Just because you do not like hat other people are saying about you in another thread, then you have serious issues. Because its a game, so shut up and let people have fun. It's not like you have to comment. There's a thing called ignoring. Try it for once.
