When her parents had decided to send her to the North for school, if there was one thing that they had forgotten to tell her about, was that it was cold. Skyler Flax had herself bundled up pretty nicely, but even then, she still felt a chill down to her bone. She supposed that she should be lucky that there wasn’t any snow or else she’d feel really perplexed by this whole thing. After all, a Southern Belle such as herself and the snow did not really go hand in hand. Other than the cold though, Skyler quite liked this little school called Canterwood Crest. It looked like something out of a television show, something that almost shouldn’t be real. While of course she was used to staring out at historic homes that survived the raging battles of the Civil War, she could not help but to think that there was something rather gothic about the North as well. Canterwood had nothing but brick buildings, stone buildings, they were cold looking like their environment, but at the same time, still had their charm about them, if not a little eerie.
She wondered if there were any other students from the South, surely they had to have been. Her parents only sent her to the most proper of schools, and they had selected Canterwood for a reason. Skyler certainly hoped, it would be nice to know that there was somebody else like her, far away from home. Then again, she shouldn’t be so selfish, it was an honor to come to Canterwood Crest and she would make do. Besides, it was a silly thought to believe that she was the only from the South, even more that she would be the only one missing her home. There were probably students who had come from farther away than just silly little Nashville. Even more importantly though, Skyler realized that she should not just stick to making friends with people with the South, “Thou shall be more open minded,” she told herself now, smiling at her southern accent. After all, she was a debutante; it would be childish of her to forget all that she has learned from her lessons. Grace, poise, and being proper was needed in everyday life, including socializing with other classmates and not just at fancy parties.
Even with that in her mind though, without her parents around to eye her like a hawk, Skyler could not see the harm in relaxing for a little bit. Being watched by her parents was like being watched by the public eye, and while her family was very well off, Skyler knew she should be lucky that they were just rich, and not rich and famous. The chaos that it could create could be monstrous, and she was thankful that she had no part in that at all. Though Skyler wasn’t completely naïve of school life, Southern girls could be quite vicious and crafty, and she was certain that it was no different here at a school where there were no parents and only teachers to monitor them, and of course, it’s not like their teachers were around all the time. There must be popular girls around here, and Skyler wondered what they were like before shaking her head, “Such a silly thought,” she murmured to herself, people were people no matter what, there was no need to get lost in new ideals when she hardly knew anything yet. Speaking of lost though, Skyler stopped and glanced around before looking down at her campus map, “I think I’m lost myself…great. So much for a leisurely stroll.” Even though she had not planned to go anywhere, it would not help her cause if she could not find her way back as well.
