My phone buzzed, and I happily checked it, hoping that one of my friends was texting me. Sadly, it was just chain mail. "Send this to ten of your friends or..." I stopped reading, rolling my eyes. I looked around the Ice Cream Shop, sipping my ice cold chocolate milkshake. Even though there was still snow on the ground, I still indulged in the weekly ice cream. There was no reason not to! I saw Sammie, my best friend, walk in the door.
“Sammie!” I called, waving her over.

'kate, sweetie.' i grabbed her hand and squeezed it, sitting down gracefully. 'i missed you.' |

I smiled. It was great to see my friend again. I felt like I hadn't seen her forever. Or my other friends for that matter. I was hit by a pang of sadness. I shoved it out of my head, concentrating on having a good conversation with Sammie.
“So what's new?” I asked.
Sammie looked great, as always. I eyed her bag, which was mint green from Gucci and totally adorable. I made a mental reminder to check out their website later and add the bag to my wish list. Or maybe I would just ask to borrow it sometime. That was the great thing about having a best friend with taste. Over break I hadn't really gotten to see anyone or talk to anyone from school. I had gone home and hung with my family, played in the snow with my sister, and went shopping. It wasn't as glamorous as what some of the girls and guys at Canterwood had done, but it was perfect for me. Now that I was back from break I was new. No more shy Kate who hid in the library and studied or went back to her dorm right after school to go on the computer. I was ready to show Canterwood who I really was.

I smiled, showing my pearly white teeth. My brown cat eye made my dark brown eyes seem wider and more alert.
“Not really.” I told her smiling. “Life has been super boring without being here. So there hasn't been any drama? I'm surprised.”
And I was. There was always something going on at Canterwood. Whether it was a new student who wanted to be the queen bee, or an old student returning to stir up old secrets. I was actually surprised that there wasn't anything going on! It seemed like drama just that there wasn't drama.
